An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had increased to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other platform users also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
