Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
